Navigable depuis plus de 3 000 ans, la Saône traverse 3 régions (Grand Est, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) et 6 départements (Vosges, Haute-Saône, Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, Rhône, Ain). Elle arrose plusieurs grandes villes et communes telles que Chalon-sur-Saône, Mâcon et Lyon, et compte une cinquantaine d’affluents dont le Doubs. Elle est navigable et il est possible d’y pratiquer plusieurs activités nautiques comme le kayak, le canoë et l’aviron.
